Mosaic

Mosaics are works made-up of cut fragments of glass, ceramics, pebbles or stone that are arranged and grouted in a variety of techniques and patterns to create magical assemblages. Mosaics have been traced back to the fourth millennium and were made for both public as well as domestic uses. This tradition continues today.

Classes at the art center explore historical as well as contemporary mosaics. Projects cover the most simplistic 2 and 3 dimensional designs and explore both functional and decorative uses. Indoor and outdoor sculptures are explored by carving Styrofoam. Chicken wire and wood are used to form armatures. The understanding of adhesives and grouts is explored. Students are encouraged to create original works of art from learning and experimenting with historical as well as contemporary techniques.

Basic materials of tiles, glass, grout are supplied. Specialty materials and some readymade forms, goggles and nippers are required to be purchased by the students.

Chicago is rich in the art of mosaics. Field trips will be scheduled!

Mosaic classes are offered in the main building at 2603 Sheridan Road.
