Join Art After 5 coordinator and celebrated artist, Linda Kramer in a Chicago home to view a collection of figurative paintings and sculpture. The collection features over 100 works by internationally renowned artists. Highlights include a celebrated piece by Robert Barnes, who has refused to be categorized, occupying his own space outside the mainstream of contemporary art even though his art aligns with conventional media and narrative subject matter. Other works feature: Ed Paschke, a painter of all aspects of the human figure who was especially attracted to the weird, criminal and taboo, extremes which exposed hidden flaws within civilization; Roger Brown, whose comic book style narrative is at once intensely original and personal, while also exemplifying a significant aspect of Chicago’s art history; and David Sharpe, whose willingness to explore beyond the perceived limitations produces insightful painting which truly brings one back to a contemplative re-inspection of that which surrounds us every day. Works by Lee Godie and Philip Pearlstein round out the collection. Attendees will also enjoy a viewing of Japanese Ikebana baskets. Please join us for a tour of one of the Chicago area’s most distinguished collections.

 | "The Nereid Beckon" Sculpture on the Grounds June 2008 - May 2009 Opening Reception: June 1, 2:30 - 4pm
Matt Dehaemer’s installation “The Nereid Beckon” floats on the lawn of the Evanston Art Center metaphorically transporting the viewer toward the historic Gross Point Lighthouse. The site-specific installation of five, 16 foot ship-like bottles is composed of approximately 6,000 small, clear plastic bottles. Thousands of people have written messages attesting to their attachment, dependence, fear of or reverence for Lake Michigan.
During the day viewers are drawn to the messages, clearly visible through the individual bottles. Moving from one to the next can be mesmerizing. The cumulative effect is the gathering of expressions from a diverse community of people who have personal sentiments or little known facts to say about the Great Lake that they share...Lake Michigan.
At night. a different sight emerges, as the fleet of bottles, lit from within, becomes almost a single presence appearing to drift toward the lighthouse.
Messages include drawings from the children at Sunny Days Child Care and written memories from senior citizens at the Levy Center and Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, both visual and written messages from children of District 65 Schools: Walker, Orrington, Lincolnwood, Willard, Dawes, Lincoln, Washington elementary schools and Nichols, Chute, Oakton & Haven middle schools. Messages also come from students & teachers at the Music Institute of Chicago, Roycemore School, Baker Demonstration School, Chiaravalle Montessori School, Dewey School Ecology Club and Girl Scout Troops 745 & 746. In addition, visitors to the Evanston Ecology Center and the YWCA, residents of the Presbyterian Homes, the Mather Pavillion, Mather Homes and 3 Crowns, members of the Osher Life Long Learning Institute groups, Northwestern University, Chris Green’s poetry writing class at Loyola University, Family Focus, Young Evanston Artists, Evanston Youth Job Center, Evanston Library Teen Center, Northeast Association, Evanston Women’s Club, Jr. League of Evanston & the North Shore, Northwestern Settlement House, Open Studio, Evanston Arts Council/Public Arts Council, City of Evanston: Mayor Morton, Council and Staff, Arts & Business Council, NEXT Theater and Evanston Art Center volunteers, staff and students, Wilmette Park District Kindergarten, The Garden Club of Evanston, Ramona School Garden Club, Evanston Current Events Club, Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club, Rotary International and several book clubs have participated. First Bank & Trust of Evanston, Art + Science Salon, Sara Gutheridge, Gerry Macsai, Sandy Brown, realtor, The Homestead Hotel, 800 Condominium Association and The Paper Source solicited messages from their customers and staff. Many unidentified individuals are also part of the art.
This project could not have been realized without the generosity of the City of Evanston’s Community Public Art Program, Community Art Fund, the Illinois Arts Council, Beth & David Hart, Allan Drebin and the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation and the hard work of committee members Beth Hart, Geraldine Macsai, Coni Lyman, Jane Chapman, Katherine Hart, Bill Lampkin, Bruce Rogers, Barbara Blades and EAC staff Paula Danoff, Larry Boswelll, Jyl Bonaguro, Judy Fenton, Bonnie Katz, and Alan Leder, Executive Director.

 | Christo's Gates: Why is this Art? Sunday, February 14th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
Evanston Art Center Presents A Slide Lecture on Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Theory and Practice
Lecture followed by a reception
Katherine Hilden, Artist and Evanston Art Center Faculty member, will present a timely lecture on the art projects that Christo and Jeanne-Claude have installed all over the world in the past fifty years. This is the 5th anniversary of "The Gates" in New York's Central Park. The celebrated projects of the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude have puzzled many people because these projects are both enormous in scale and yet temporary. The 7,500 Gates installed in Central Park in February 2005 were up for only 16 days, after being in the making for 26 years. This lecture will address the question, why is this Art? The lecture places Christo's work in the context of the history of Western art. This program is free and open to the public.

 | EAC Celebrates It's 80th Thomas Mann, Dinner & Lecture August 22, 2009 beginning at 6:30pm
Come celebrate 80 years with the Evanston Art Center! We will be hosting Thomas Mann at Gio Restaurant on August 22nd at 6:30pm. Dinner and lecture cost $50 (cash bar). There will be a book signing following the lecture entitled, "Details from the Adventure: An artist tracks the path of his career from the early 1970's to the weird world of NOW." To Purchase Tickets Call 847-475-5300
Thomas Mann has been making his living as a full-time art professional since he graduated from college in 1970. Best known for his "Techno-Romantic" jewelry designs he eschews the title of jeweler, and prefers the description that he is an artist working in the medium of jewelry. With a degree in technical theatre, set design and lighting, he also invents and builds large public art sculpture and installations. His touring exhibition "STORM CYCLE: An Artist Responds to Hurricane Katrina" is a blend of the many concept and techniques employed in his work.
Since the turn of the millennium, Mann and his production company, Thomas Mann Design Inc., and his gallery, Gallery I/O, both based in New Orleans, have survived the negative economic effects of 911, the death of his wife, Hurricane Katrina and now, this bizarre recession. As a result, he found it necessary to increase his creative output, up the number of events to present and sell his work, begin teaching hands-on workshops, start a new business venture, studioFLUX, and in general get busier than he's ever been before.
