JingXue, one of our EAC Interns, writes about the Curatorial Fellowship Exhibition SACBE Pathways of Connection, displayed in our First Floor Gallery from July 6 - August 4, 2024:
About: The "SACBE: Step into a journey where ancient roads and modern threads weave together stories of connection and community. Pathways of Connection" exhibition, curated by Gustavo Herrera Yepez, delves into the legacy of the ancient Maya civilization through their SACBE, raised, white plastered roads that connected major ceremonial centers and cities across the Yucatan Peninsula. The exhibition showcases traditional Mayan weaving alongside modern fiber art, highlighting how communities use the power of connection to address societal and environmental issues, celebrating the cultural richness of the Mayan people.
The exhibition itself: Each piece in the exhibition is unique, distinguished by its patterns, materials, and sizes. The artworks display a vibrant array of colors, each chosen with care to create harmony and contrast. The intricate designs of the weavings tell stories that blend ancient traditions with contemporary reflections. Some pieces burst with bold, lively colors, while others use softer tones to convey tranquility and contemplation. The variety of materials, from coarse natural fibers to delicate modern textiles, adds depth and texture to the exhibition, making each artwork stand out.
Learned: Curating this exhibition has been an enlightening journey, teaching me various techniques and the intricate process of setting up a show. I learned the art of room arrangement, ensuring that each piece is displayed to its fullest potential while maintaining a cohesive narrative throughout the space. The preparation involved meticulous planning, from connecting with the artists and selecting the perfect pieces to designing the exhibition cards that provide insightful descriptions for visitors. Receiving and cataloging the artworks, then carefully placing them, was a hands-on experience that deepened my appreciation for the behind-the-scenes efforts in curating. This process not only honed my organizational skills but also reinforced the importance of creating a welcoming and informative environment for all who visit.
