The Evanston Art Center’s “Permeated Surfaces” exhibition is a highly anticipated event of artistic musicality and fluidity. Alison Svoboda’s raw edges of torn paper, Cydney Lewis’s twisted bits of discarded plastic, and Sandra Perlow’s layering of printed and painted paper, creates movement permeated with notes of dissonance. Organic forms and sensual shapes echo in these three artists’ works, manifesting in both 2 and 3-dimensional pieces.
Alison Svoboda is a Chicago-based artist who draws inspiration from natural forms, fractal patterns, and Buddhist imagery. After receiving her B.A. in Design from Purdue University, she developed a process that joins an impulsive method of ink drawing and a meditative system of collage into large works that evoke a “meditative dream state, searching for completeness and self-unity.” In addition to her studio practice, Allison teaches at Lill Street Art Center. She appears in shows across the country and recently completed the Brush Creek Residency in Wyoming.
Cydney Lewis is an artistic polyglot. She began her formal training with a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Chicago Urbana-Champaign. She studied a diverse background in filmic design and performing arts, eventually leading to an M.F.A from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. All these elements are present in visual artwork, which transforms three-dimensional materials into storytelling devices. She explains her oeuvre, stating, “I try to create a world I want to live in.” She was recognized twice by the Museum of Science and Industry and has recently shown at Sharks Are Born Swimming, South Suburban College in 2013 and Layers, Paths and Channels at the Chicago Artist Coalition in 2012.
Abstract painter and prink-maker, Sandra Perlow, has an M.A. from the Illinois Institute of Design as well as an M.F.A from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work draws on a broad cannon ranging from Chinese brush painting to Phillip Guston in order to create “pictorial membranes” that explore her interest in accumulated layers of history. The “energetic shuffling and sorting of memory, text, sound and image” that characterize her process is highly visible in her pieees, in which “motifs are concealed and revealed through veils of color as decorative surfaces are echoed in painterly patterns and improvisatory mark-making.” She frequently shows individually with Chicago Galleries, including the Dubhe Carreno Gallery, and recently appeared in The Artist Project group exhibition in New York City.
