THE EVANSTON ART CENTER LAUNCHES ITS FIRST ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM TITLED “THE LIVING STUDIO”
We welcome artist Ben Whitehouse to the Living Studio work space from January 6 through April 13, 2014
Artist-In-Residence programs blossomed out of various artist communities in the 1970’s and remain essential to an artist’s development and career. Many artists access residencies as a way to engage new communities, materials, research, and modes of presentation. Residencies provide time for reflection and contemplation in an environment and with people that the artist may not otherwise encounter. Most residencies emphasize the importance of sharing knowledge, rigorous production, critique, and meaningful connections to community and culture.
The Evanston Art Center is pleased to announce an energetic new program called The Living Studio. The Living Studio is a community-based artist-in-residence program that provides a meaningful platform for local and national artists to transparently make and share knowledge about their artistic practices and processes and at the same time offer an opportunity for our various audiences to interact with a practicing artist in the act of making work. The Art Center views its residency as an investigation of openness, generosity and exchange while challenging traditional notions of the art studio. Our faculty, students, exhibiting artists, and community members will culturally benefit from our Living Studio through its interrelated programming and opportunities to engage an artist at work. Additionally, this open studio model helps to demystify the artistic process by letting the community in to view and talk with an artist at work.
For the first time in the Art Center’s history we are excited to make one of our most visible spaces a center of engagement and exchange. For the winter of 2014, we have selected local artist Ben Whitehouse (January 6-April 13, 2014). You can learn more about Ben’s practice and view his work at: www.benwhitehousestudio.com.
We encourage anyone interested to join us for the following Sunday afternoon open Living Studio sessions: Sundays, January 12 and February 9 from 1 to 4pm, when you can stop in and see what Ben is working on.
The Living Studio will be an ongoing residency program with a second artist to be selected in the spring of 2014 for a late summer / fall engagement period.
