As Creative Director and Photographer for over 40 years, I have always emphasized strong Composition above all else. Whether collaborating with multi-national companies or students in a more intimate setting, my objective is consistent — seeing things in a different way.
Education and Career:
- School of Visual Arts in New York City - B.F.A.
Career:
After college, I then founded and managed The Barnett Group, where we worked with clients to establish their branding and corporate identity, annual reports, websites, and foreign-language adaptations.
Our work had been highlighted and published in the most prominent industry magazines, and I personally led professional seminars to aspiring professionals, and spoke to industry leaders in conferences across the country.
Media:
Photography
Areas of focus:
My passion has always been Photography, which I’ve taught in various schools and adult education centers. As a life-long creative professional, I intuitively see subject matter in two dimensions; reducing matter into form, texture, color and shape.

Other interests and inspirations:
I also teach Classic Films where we discuss and watch as a group the best of the art in “film noire,” and wonderful movies of the 1940’s-1950’s, learning about particular titles, directors, actors, and music of the period.
Dennis' teaching style:
Very simply, I love teaching. Since moving to the Chicago area from NYC in 2012, I have taught classes at Evanston Art Center and Highland Park Art Center. My classes range from Basic Camera Settings, to Abstract Photography, to Landscape, Black & White, Travel, Nature, and Portraiture Photography, with several consistent themes — regardless of the genre, I enjoy teaching in an engaging and creative atmosphere. I believe that for photography to be accessible and enjoyable, it must become intuitive.
I’ve always loved teaching at Evanston Art Center because from the moment one enters the building, one feels a belonging in a friendly and creative environment.
